Vioxx

Vioxx (rofecoxib), also classified as a COX-2 inhibiter, is a popular non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug manufactured by Merck Pharmaceutucal Company used for the treatment of arthritis and relief of pain. Vioxx had been prescribed for approximately 20 million Americans and hundreds of millions worldwide. In September of 2004 Merck withdrew Vioxx from the market because of studies linking it to thousands of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths. More recently evidence has revealed that Merck knew the cardiovascular risks Vioxx posed prior to it’s ever putting the drug on the market. People who have suffered injuries such as heart attacks and strokes after taking Vioxx have filed suit on the basis that Merck failed to warn of the dangerous propensities of the drug.
